The Portuguese authorities activated a food alert that led to the withdrawal from the market of shrimp imported from Spain. The situation was identified through an official control carried out in the Portuguese market.
The reason for the product withdrawal is related to the excess sulfites found in the shrimp. These substances, when present in quantities above those permitted, represent a risk to the health of consumers.
The competent authorities classified the risk associated with this situation as "not serious". Despite this, the food safety protocol was activated, resulting in the removal of the product from the shelves for consumer protection.
