João Guilherme Ribeiro points to cargo capacity and Canary Islands connection as factors to make the ferry viable

dnoticias.pt9 September 2026 at 12:22

João Guilherme Ribeiro, master's degree holder in Economics, presented an economic-financial analysis within the scope of the study on the viability of the ferry connection between Madeira and the mainland. The presentation took place during the parliamentary sessions of the JPP (Juntos Pelas Pessoas), a party that dedicated these sessions to the theme "Ferry and Territorial Continuity".

The economist defended an alternative model to the one currently under discussion, based on three fundamental pillars: a greater focus on cargo transport, triangulation with the Canary Islands, and reduction of port costs. These measures would be essential to make the ferry connection economically viable.

In his speech, João Guilherme Ribeiro began by establishing comparisons between the potential Madeira-mainland connection and other existing maritime routes, seeking to demonstrate the viability of the proposed model through references to similar experiences. The study aims to evaluate the conditions necessary for the ferry to become a sustainable and competitive alternative to the air transport currently predominant.
