Vatican: Patriarch Emphasizes Centrality of Love at Mass in St. Peter's Basilica

Agência ECCLESIA9 September 2026 at 12:16

The Patriarch of Lisbon, D. Rui Valério, presided over a Mass in the crypt of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican today, challenging Christians to center their lives on love and the dimension of eternity. During the celebration, which took place in the Chapel of the Poles, the Catholic leader stated that nothing of the Church will stand if the love that opens life and brings people into communion with one another is not in the hearts of Christians. D. Rui Valério considered that daily actions should not be based on fleeting realities, recalling that believers are citizens fascinated by eternity.

In his address, the patriarch noted that in St. Peter's crypt one feels a special sensitivity toward what is absolute and structuring of existence, which shapes daily decisions. The leader crossed biblical passages on marriage with a new way of living, emphasizing that the beatitudes are the face of Jesus.

The Eucharist was part of the Diocesan Jubilee Commission's program, which took place in 2025 within the framework of the presentation to the Pope of the book "Hope Does Not Disappoint – Book of Jubilee Graces." This work brings together the graces and testimonies associated with the jubilee experience in the Patriarchate of Lisbon and was offered to the Pope at the end of the general audience in St. Peter's Square.
