Europe promises to act after PISA reveals decline in children's reading and maths skills

The latest OECD PISA report, based on a standardised test carried out by 15-year-olds, revealed that student performance in OECD countries reached a historic low in maths and reading comprehension.

The study results show a significant decline in reading and maths skills among the children assessed.

Following the release of these alarming data, Europe promises to take measures to reverse this trend of educational decline.

The PISA report is considered one of the main international indicators for assessing the quality of education systems worldwide.

Ebola epidemic in DR Congo hits tragic milestone and WHO warns of lack of resources and transmission "out of control"

The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, has become the deadliest in the country and the second largest worldwide, with 6,686 confirmed cases, 3,226 deaths and a case fatality rate of 48.3%. WHO warned that the outbreak remains "out of control" and urgently called for an additional 5,000 health workers and 1,600 hospital beds, considering that current capacity — 4,000 operational staff and 1,400 beds — is insufficient. The virus is now spreading across six provinces in an area exceeding 630,000 square kilometres, with internal risk classified as "very high" and elevated risk for neighbouring countries such as Angola. Vaccination of frontline teams with the Ervebo drug has already immunised more than 2,000 professionals, but WHO is calling for new international partners to be mobilised to prevent the collapse of the health response.
