Universidade Popular de Coimbra is resuming its journey through the history of Western music with the Musical Listening Workshop II, which will take place over three sessions on September 12, 19, and 26. This initiative follows a first cycle that covered the period from Ancient Greece to Baroque, and now proposes to advance through Classicism and Romanticism to modern music and contemporary avant-gardes.
The sessions will cover the Classical period with Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, moving through Romanticism and its main authors such as Liszt, Chopin, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Strauss. The third session will focus on the transformation of musical language in the 20th century, highlighting Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Schaeffer, Boulez, Stockhausen and Cage.
The workshop is open to all interested parties, regardless of whether they have prior musical training, and it is not necessary to have attended the first edition. The facilitator is Hugo Brito, a professor at the Art School of the Coimbra Music Conservatory and at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, and a researcher at the University of Minho.
Registration runs until September 11 through the website of Universidade Popular de Coimbra, a section of Ateneu de Coimbra dedicated to promoting knowledge and cultural training.
