Government prepares solution for lack of water on the south bank of the Tagus, says Environment Minister

SAPO Notícias9 September 2026 at 11:48

The Portuguese Government is preparing a solution to resolve the problem of water shortage on the south bank of the Tagus. The Environment Minister, Maria da Graça Carvalho, announced this measure during a hearing at the Environment Committee of the Assembly of the Republic.

The technical solution that will be developed will be complementary to the use of groundwater, meaning it will work together with the existing groundwater abstraction.

By a dispatch published today, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the AdP Group (Águas de Portugal) were tasked with presenting a project to resolve the situation. The deadline established for presenting this project is 120 days.
