Lyon, coached by Paulo Fonseca, officially announced the transfer of Portuguese midfielder Mathys De Carvalho to Al Diriyah, a newly promoted club to the Saudi Pro League managed by Bruno Lage, former coach of Benfica between 2019 and 2020 and between 2024 and 2025.
The operation was completed for 1.1 million euros, with Lyon retaining the right to 10% of any future sell-on fee in a potential transfer for the Portuguese midfielder. The 21-year-old player, a Portuguese U-20 international, came through the French club's academy and represented the first team in 22 matches across all competitions.
Mathys De Carvalho's debut for Lyon came on September 19, 2025, in a match against Angers. This transfer marks the first experience abroad for the young midfielder, who thus leaves French football to embark on a new adventure in Saudi Arabia.
Lyon used the statement to thank Mathys De Carvalho for his years of dedication to the club, wishing him success in his new challenge at Al Diriyah.
