Study with CCMAR participation maps carbon on the floor of European seas

A study with the participation of the Marine Sciences Centre (CCMAR) managed to map the carbon existing on the floor of European seas. The research analyzed a total of 50,541 measurements to obtain this data on the distribution of carbon in marine sediments.

The results of the analysis indicate that the most sheltered coastal zones tend to concentrate a greater quantity of carbon in the sediments. This discovery may have important implications for understanding the role of oceans in the carbon cycle and climate change.

Jorge Assis, researcher at CCMAR, participated in this international research. The study represents a significant advance in knowledge about carbon storage in European seabeds.
