The United States revealed plans to ban the import of Canadian alcoholic beverages as part of an escalation in its trade war. It was announced on the White House website that, starting September 29, most Canadian alcoholic beverages, motorcycles and some dairy products could no longer cross the border.
In addition to the import bans, various cheeses, lumber, furniture and other products were added to a list of 20 billion dollars in merchandise subject to 50% tariffs already in effect. The escalation of the conflict was revealed just hours after Canada's retaliatory tariffs on 20 billion dollars in American products took effect.
All these retaliation measures occurred after the collapse of negotiations last month, which led Donald Trump to respond bitterly by signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. The White House announcement comes amid new threats made by the president himself.
