A new report prepared by the Secretariat of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the World Bank analyzes how digital trade is transforming the way the economies of Latin America and the Caribbean connect to international markets. The document highlights that digitalization not only facilitates access to global markets but also creates new opportunities for local businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.
The report points out that, despite significant advances, there are still barriers to overcome, including the need to improve digital infrastructure and expand digital inclusion. The research indicates that, by promoting an environment favorable to innovation and digital entrepreneurship, countries in the region could boost their economic growth.
Among the recommendations presented, the authors suggest investments in digital education and training, as well as the adoption of policies that favor integration and collaboration among the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. This approach could not only increase the region's competitiveness in the global landscape but also promote more inclusive development, benefiting marginalized communities and promoting equal opportunities.
The report concludes emphasizing the importance of cooperation between governments, the private sector, and multilateral institutions to maximize the benefits of digital trade and ensure that all segments of society can benefit from this new economic era.
