A British university student named Elle Black, 21, nearly died of sepsis after confusing the early symptoms of the disease with a severe hangover. Elle was 18 and studying Communication, Journalism and Culture at Cardiff University in Wales when she fell ill in 2024, after spending a night watching the Six Nations Tournament with friends. She said everyone, including herself, initially assumed it was just a hangover.
However, her condition rapidly worsened and she began experiencing fever, nausea, extreme drowsiness and severe muscle pain. After an online consultation, Elle was prescribed antibiotics for suspected laryngitis, but she was so unwell that she couldn't pick up the medication from the pharmacy.
When Elle finally realized the severity of her condition, she sought medical attention. Doctors warned that the approximately 12-hour delay in diagnosis could have been fatal. Prompt treatment was essential for her recovery, preventing a tragic outcome.
This case serves as a warning about the dangers of sepsis and the importance of not ignoring symptoms that may seem common, especially when they manifest more severely than expected.
