Without official list of missing persons, families turn to social media to search for news of flood victims in Tibet

oglobo9 September 2026 at 07:30

Nearly two weeks after a powerful avalanche of ice, rocks and mud devastated a border complex in Tibet, China has yet to release an official list of the missing. The absence of official information from Chinese authorities left families and communities without concrete data on the number of victims.

In Nepal, a neighboring country also affected by the same catastrophe, at least 1,341 people have died and approximately 5,000 are missing, according to the most recent official data. These numbers contrast with the lack of transparency on the Tibetan side.

Faced with this scarcity of information, those affected found in social media a way to seek help and express their pain. Family members turned to these platforms to try to obtain news of victims and request support.

The article highlights that, without an official list of missing persons, local communities were forced to create their own information and solidarity networks through social media to cope with the tragedy.
