Socialists at a crossroads: PS chose abstention to avoid being seen "next to PSD"

Expresso9 September 2026 at 07:00

The PS (Socialist Party) decided to abstain on the motion of censure against the Government, in a deliberate strategy to avoid being associated with the PSD and the right-wing forces. The decision not to enable the motion was considered essential for its rejection, but proved to be politically delicate.

During the debate, the PS was under heavy criticism, from both the left and the right, for keeping the Government in office while not obtaining concrete guarantees about the State Budget. The position was described as a crossroads for the socialists.

The prime minister did not offer further guarantees to the PS about the State Budget during the afternoon, leaving the socialists without the security they sought to justify their support for the executive.

The motion of censure was ultimately rejected, but the PS ended the day without achieving significant progress in budget negotiations, in a moment that exposed the weaknesses of their political strategy.

50 years later, China remains silent about Mao's death but preserves his legacy

China marked 50 years since Mao Zedong's death without any official ceremony or coverage in state media, in a demonstration of calculated silence about the founder of the People's Republic. Although the regime formally keeps his legacy untouched, with his statue in Tiananmen Square and the portrait in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing chose not to commemorate the anniversary, reflecting the persistent ambivalence towards his polarizing figure, responsible both for the founding of modern China and for policies that caused millions of deaths. The decision not to mark the date contrasts with the annual celebration of the founding of the People's Republic on October 1st.
