The European Commission publishes today a proposal to create common rules that allow EU member states and local authorities of the European Union (EU) to regulate short-term accommodation, such as Airbnb, in areas under housing pressure.
The proposal aims to establish a common regulatory framework for all EU countries, giving local authorities tools to control the growth of local accommodation.
Member states may adapt the rules to local reality, but will have to follow the general principles defined at European level.
This initiative comes in a context of growing concern about the impact of short-term accommodation on the real estate market and housing accessibility in various European cities.
