Marco Rubio does not rule out the installation of a US military base in Colombia as part of the Shield of the Americas

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General9 September 2026 at 04:22

US State Department Secretary Marco Rubio during his visit to Colombia stated that the current Colombian authorities "inherited a series of catastrophes." This is his first trip as part of a regional tour that also covers Ecuador and Peru. He welcomed Colombia's return to Washington's political orbit.

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella gladly received the American guest. Together they signed the so-called "Barranquilla agreements," whose main directions are the country's reconstruction after the August 10 earthquake, economic recovery, and strengthening of security.

During the visit, Rubio left open the possibility of placing an American military base in Colombia as part of the "Americas Shield," which President Trump is promoting. He noted that this requires an invitation from the Colombian side and a thorough study of whether it is feasible.

During his stay in Colombia, Rubio not only began outlining Colombia's new role in the region but also discussed the problems of Cuba and Venezuela.

Chronicle from Beirut: when books become cultural resistance

The chronicle describes the experience of Layla Tarhini, a 32-year-old Lebanese woman displaced from the southern suburbs of Beirut, who found in literature a form of cultural resistance during the most difficult moments of the conflict. At the Philosophia bookstore, where she works, Tarhini recounts how reading historical novels about medieval Persian dynasties transported her away from the reality of bombs and Israeli drones flying over the capital. The story illustrates how books became refuge and an instrument of cultural survival in a context of ongoing war in Lebanon.
