'South Park' Changes Name to 'South America' and Satirizes Donald Trump

oglobo9 September 2026 at 00:32

The creators of "South Park", Trey Parker and Matt Stone, announced before the premiere of the 29th season that the series will now be called "South America" — a satire of the name changes decreed by President Donald Trump. The decision by the creators of the satirical animated series aims to ridicule the attempts by the American president to rename bodies of water and territories of the United States.

Amid trade tensions with Canada, Trump renamed Lake Ontario — which lies on the border between the two countries — as "Lake America" in August. Apple and Google immediately updated the name on their map services, following the American government's determination.

Last year, the president also renamed the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" and, this weekend, suggested that the state of New Mexico should be called "New America". These changes generated international controversy, especially with Mexico and Canada.

The name change of the adult cartoon series is another criticism by the creators of contemporary American politics, a recurring theme in "South Park" throughout its nearly three decades of existence. The satire aims to draw attention to what they consider an absurdity in the Trump administration's decisions.
