Iñigo Pérez, after Borussia Dortmund-Villarreal: We played a brilliant match, but it's desperate

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General8 September 2026 at 23:19

Villarreal suffered a 3-2 defeat in their Champions League debut against Borussia Dortmund. Coach Iñigo Pérez considered it "desperate" his team's inability to convert the numerous goal-scoring chances they create during matches.

The Basque coach acknowledged that Villarreal played, at times, a "brilliant" game, demonstrating quality and control in various phases of the match. However, he admitted that all the good work done was completely eclipsed by the negative result.

The Spanish team thus recorded their first defeat in the European competition, in a game where they ended up paying dearly for their lack of efficiency in attack, allowing Dortmund to complete a comeback in the scoreline.

Mourinho and the Champions League that's missing at Real Madrid

José Mourinho is back at Real Madrid for a second spell at the club, with the main objective of winning the Champions League, a title that escaped him during his first experience in Madrid, between 2010 and 2013. This new opportunity represents for the Portuguese coach the possibility of settling the so-called "European debt" that remains unpaid and completing his curriculum with the most desired trophy in European football for the whites.
