Researchers from the University of Coimbra are close to discovering promising medications to halt the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The scientists are using artificial intelligence to shorten years of laboratory trials, thus accelerating the research process.
The main goal of the team is to find the molecular "lock" that allows them to "close the door" through which a toxic protein circulates in the brain. This protein is responsible for the progressive destruction of neurons in patients affected by the disease.
By identifying this mechanism, the researchers hope to develop treatments that can block the circulation of the toxic protein, potentially preventing the progression of Alzheimer's.
