Amid the escalating crisis at the Supreme Federal Court (STF), the Court's president, Edson Fachin, is evaluating taking over the rapporteurships of the investigations into Banco Master and the INSS fraud, currently under the responsibility of Minister André Mendonça. The pressure on Fachin increased after the publication of an open letter signed by 13 former presidents of the STF advocating an "urgent" response to the situation.
The institutional conflict was further aggravated on Tuesday by a decision by Mendonça that removed the director-general of the Federal Police (PF), Andrei Rodrigues. The measure intensified the tension among the Court's ministers.
In recent days, Fachin signaled considering putting an end to the Fake News inquiry, currently under the command of Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The president of the STF also indicated he would bring to the plenary a PF report dealing with the proximity between Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, and Moraes, as well as a ruling by his colleague against Mendonça based on an intelligence report.
