Colombia's President, Abelardo de la Espriella, relaxed on Tuesday the rules for carrying legalized weapons in the country, amid a security crisis aggravated by the actions of drug trafficking mafias. He has been in power for only one month and came to the Presidency with the promise of fighting guerrillas and other armed groups that control extensive areas of Colombian territory.
Espriella is a right-wing politician who, during the electoral campaign, made speeches in favor of carrying weapons in a country marked by more than six decades of armed conflict. This conflict left more than 10 million victims and at least 1 million dead.
On Tuesday, Espriella announced that he issued a decree to suspend a restriction related to carrying weapons, continuing the measures he promised during his electoral campaign to address violence in the country.
