The universities of Minho and Lisbon are organizing from September 12 to 16 the 41st SMYTE (Small Meeting on Yeast Transport and Energetics) at the Nadir Afonso Museum of Contemporary Art in Chaves. The event brings together about 80 national and international specialists in the areas of cell transport, bioenergetics, metabolism, disease and biotechnology, with a five-day program that includes about 50 invited speakers.
The meeting addresses fundamental questions of cellular life, including how cells obtain nutrients, produce and use energy, transport molecules through membranes, communicate with each other and adapt to environmental changes while maintaining their internal balance. The program will analyze areas such as the structure and function of transporters, membrane dynamics, cell signaling and trafficking, organelle function, metabolism, stress response, aging, disease, evolution, biotechnology and metabolic engineering.
The opening session takes place on September 12, at 6:30 PM, at the Premium Hotel Chaves, with the organizing committee composed of Sandra Paiva from the School of Sciences at the University of Minho, Catarina Prista from the Superior Institute of Agronomy and Miguel Teixeira from the Superior Technical Institute. The closing ceremony is scheduled for September 15, at 7:00 PM, at the Nadir Afonso Museum, with the presence of the president of the Municipality of Chaves, Nuno Vaz.
SMYTE stands out for its close and interactive format, which promotes idea exchange and new international collaborations, featuring doctoral students and young researchers in direct contact with world-renowned scientists such as Elizabeth Miller (University of Dundee), Christopher Burd (Yale University), George Diallinas (University of Athens) and Karl Kuchler (University of Vienna). The edition also has the support of the European Molecular Biology Organization, the Luso-American Foundation for Development, the Embassy of Austria in Lisbon and the Portuguese Society of Microbiology.
