The State Environmental Institute (Inea) sent a team to Botafogo Cove, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, to verify oil stains identified in the early afternoon this Tuesday (8) on the water surface of the region.
The material was captured by the RJTV 1st edition team, from TV Globo, through aerial images. In the images, it is possible to see at least three points with the presence of oil, one of them near the sandbar. The material appears spread in different points on the water surface.
There is still no official information about the origin of the material or about the extent of the affected area. The Inea team should evaluate the characteristics of the stains and investigate the possible causes of the appearance of oil in the cove.
The region is an area of circulation of small vessels. The case occurs in a context of other recent environmental problems in the city.
