Labor productivity per hour worked in Portugal in the second quarter of this year was only 3.6% above the value recorded in 2015, representing very limited growth in more than a decade. This data places Portugal as the fourth worst performance in the European Union in terms of productivity evolution.
Only three European countries had worse performance than Portugal in this period: Italy, Greece and France. This means Portugal is among the countries with the lowest productivity growth per hour worked in the European bloc.
Economists have already raised alerts regarding this situation, highlighting concerns about the competitive capacity of the Portuguese economy and the need to implement measures that promote greater growth in national productivity.
