The research analyzed health data from thousands of American adults over several decades, examining the relationship between blood sodium levels, an indicator of hydration, and the biological aging process. The results revealed that people with higher blood sodium levels, suggestive of lower fluid consumption, showed accelerated biological aging and a greater likelihood of developing chronic diseases such as heart failure, stroke, diabetes, and dementia.
The study followed more than 11,000 adults over an average period of 25 years, monitoring various health markers and comparing them with hydration levels. It was found that adults with blood sodium levels above 142 mmol/L were more likely to die younger and to suffer from diseases associated with premature aging.
The researchers concluded that adequate hydration may play an important role in preventing chronic diseases and slowing the aging process. These findings suggest that simply maintaining good hydration throughout life can be a simple and accessible strategy to promote healthier aging.
The study authors caution, however, that further research is needed to confirm these associations and establish more specific recommendations on the optimal amount of fluids to consume. Nevertheless, the results reinforce the importance of regular hydration habits as part of a healthy lifestyle.
