Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing "deep concern" over the glorification of a man convicted of crimes against humanity. The Portuguese executive specifically referred to signs of official support from Serbian authorities for this convicted person.
Portugal's position comes following public manifestations of support from Serbia for someone who was convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity. The Portuguese authorities considered these actions incompatible with international commitments to the prevention of genocide and war crimes.
This is not the first time the international community has expressed concern over the glorification of those responsible for genocides. Portugal thus joins other countries and organizations that have warned about the dangers of normalizing or celebrating figures convicted of crimes against humanity.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of honoring the memory of the victims of these crimes and of maintaining internationally assumed commitments to the prevention of genocide and the promotion of justice.
