Government announces extraordinary supplement for pensions up to 1,611 euros

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 16:10

The Government announced an extraordinary supplement for pensions up to 1,611 euros. This measure was revealed at the opening of the Parliamentary debate on the motion of censure presented by the Chega party.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro was present at the debate and argued that these measures are only possible thanks to the country's economic performance and the good financial and budgetary management of the Executive.

The Chega motion of censure thus served as the backdrop for the announcement of these social measures by the Government, which sought to demonstrate the positive results of its economic management.

STF reverses removal of Federal Police directors

Minister André Mendonça, from the Supreme Federal Court, reversed the decision that had removed Federal Police directors, determining their immediate reinstatement to their positions. The initial removal measure was justified by alleged "systematic monitoring" practiced by the directors, whose reports were sent to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who requested the investigation. Mendonça accepted the defense arguments of the police officers, considering the removal disproportionate and without sufficient legal basis. The case evidences the continuity of the internal dispute between different factions of the court and raises questions about the independence of the PF regarding judicial decisions.

Francisco Figueira highlights political stability and new support measures for pensioners and the middle class

The newly elected deputy for Évora Francisco Figueira considered that the rejection of the motion of censure against the Government allows preserving political stability and maintaining focus on solving Portuguese citizens' problems. Figueira recalled that in the last seven years Portuguese citizens went to the polls four times and the country had four governments lasting less than two years. The parliamentarian highlighted two measures by the Executive with direct impact on family incomes: an extraordinary supplement of about 400 million euros for approximately two million pensionists with pensions up to 1,611.13 euros, paid in December, and an IRS reduction up to the sixth bracket, also with an impact of 400 million, whose effects will begin to be felt in November through the reduction of withholding taxes. Figueira defended that the fulfillment of these supports is possible thanks to the performance of the Portuguese economy and the Government's financial management.
