Four Portuguese tennis players will take part in the main singles draw of the Cartuxa Évora Ladies Open, an event integrated into the ITF women's professional circuit that awards points for the world ranking. Francisca Jorge, Matilde Jorge, Angelina Voloshchuk and Teresa Franco Dias represent Portugal in this competition running until Sunday, September 13, at the Évora Tennis Club, with the support of the Municipal Council.
Francisca Jorge, currently ranked 233rd in the WTA rankings, is one of Portugal's main hopes and makes her debut against Australia's Gabriela da Silva Fick, ranked 701st in the world. Her sister, Matilde Jorge, ranked 274th globally, faces France's Margaux Rouvroy, ranked 346th, while Angelina Voloshchuk, also ranked 346th, takes on Britain's Hannah Klugmann, ranked 439th. Teresa Franco Dias, ranked 1431st, faces Belgium's Greet Minnen, ranked 176th and a former world number 59.
Portugal also has Giulia Pereira de Aguiar, a Portuguese-Brazilian tennis player with Portuguese nationality, who will play against Canada's Kayla Cross, the top seed and world number 162. Among the tournament's highlights is Czech player Linda Fruhvirtova, the second seed and WTA 174th, who faces Japan's Aoi Ito. The main draw also features players from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Lithuania and Switzerland.
With $40,000 in prize money, the Cartuxa Évora Ladies Open provides an opportunity for the Portuguese players to compete at home and earn ranking points. In the doubles competition, Teresa Franco Dias and Giulia Pereira de Aguiar face Americans Kolie Allen and Mexico's Sebastiani Leon in the first round.
