Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia bring back escalation risk in Yemen

Yemeni Houthi rebels launched attacks against four regions in southern Saudi Arabia, prompting a military response from Riyadh. This episode marks a new escalation in the conflict opposing the Yemeni rebels to the coalition led by Saudi Arabia.

The attacks happen at a time of heightened tension in the Middle East region. The Saudi retaliation following the Houthi bombings represents an intensification of hostilities between the two parties.

The Houthis, supported by Iran, have been carrying out cross-border attacks against Saudi Arabian territory, while Saudi Arabia leads a military coalition that has been intervening in Yemen since 2015 to support the internationally recognized government.

This new focus of conflict can worsen the already volatile scenario in the Middle East, raising concerns about a possible expansion of the war beyond the Yemeni and Saudi Arabian borders.
