The Mirandese language will be in the spotlight during the month of September with several initiatives that reinforce its presence in schools, public life, and contemporary literature. The celebrations of Mirandese Language Day, on September 17th and 18th, include the presentation of the first Mirandese textbook for the 1st year of schooling, the translation of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic into Mirandese, and the Mirandese edition of "O Nosso Reino" by Valter Hugo Mãe. These initiatives mark the anniversary of Law No. 7/99, of January 29th, which recognized the linguistic rights of the Mirandese community and established Mirandese as a language of Portugal.
On September 17th, at the School Grouping of Miranda do Douro, the first Mirandese textbook for the 1st year of schooling will be presented, which will be the first of a series of books intended to progressively accompany the teaching of the language. At 3:00 PM, in the Noble Hall of the Town Hall, the translation of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic into the Mirandese language will be presented, carried out by the Association of Mirandese Language and Culture (ALCM). At the same session, the Strategic Plan of the Mission Structure for the Promotion of the Mirandese Language (EMPLM) will be presented, along with a new edition of "Flores Mirandezas" by José Leite de Vasconcelos, originally published in 1884 and considered the first work published in the Mirandese language.
On September 18th, in the Patio of the House of the Magistrates, "L Nuosso Reino" will be presented, the Mirandese edition of "O Nosso Reino" by Valter Hugo Mãe, with translation by Alcides Meirinhos. The writer will be present at the session as part of the celebrations of his 30 years of literary career. According to EMPLM, the publication aims to affirm Mirandese as a language capable of welcoming and recreating contemporary literature. The session will also include the presentation of the female choir Bozes de l Praino, which mostly performs repertoire in Mirandese.
The celebrations continue the following weekend, from September 25th to 27th, with the Festival of Languages in Picote, under the theme "Grammars of Resistance, language policies and citizenship." The international meeting of minority languages, organized by Frauga with support from EMPLM, features more than a dozen representatives of Iberian minority languages. The program includes theater in Mirandese, lectures, debates, book presentations, and a mass with readings in several minority languages, also celebrating the European Day of Languages on September 26th. The initiatives are promoted by the municipality of Miranda do Douro, by EMPLM, by ALCM, by the School Grouping of Miranda do Douro, and by Frauga.
