Analyst Peter Bofin considered that the insurgent attack that destroyed a tourist camp associated with Portuguese-Mozambican coach Carlos Queiroz in Niassa province, northern Mozambique, had multiple objectives: logistical resupply, economic impact on the tourism and hunting sector, and international propaganda for the Islamic State. The attack killed at least one person, displaced 2,700 people, and resulted in the kidnapping of 11 people. Despite the scale of the incursion, the analyst ruled out the possibility of it representing a sustained expansion of the insurgency to Niassa, considering it an isolated action, since the group does not have the necessary logistical support networks to maintain a permanent presence in the region. The responsible group reportedly departed from the district of Montepuez, in Cabo Delgado, a province rich in natural gas affected by insurgency since 2017.
