Porto City Council to fell 19 trees on Avenida dos Aliados and renew the "remaining trees"

SIC Notícias8 September 2026 at 12:27

The Porto City Council announced plans to fell 19 trees on Avenida dos Aliados, in the city center. The municipality intends to simultaneously carry out the renewal of the remaining trees in the area.

The trees to be felled belong to the species Acer platanoides Deborah and Acer platanoides Crimson King. According to the municipality, these trees showed "unsatisfactory vegetative development, reduced crown development, and decay at the level of the branches and collar region," which justified the decision for removal.

With this intervention, the Porto City Council aims not only to remove the trees in poor phytosanitary condition but also to proceed with the renewal and replacement of the existing trees on Avenida dos Aliados, one of the most emblematic areas of the city.

Government guarantees it is not profiting from the fuel crisis and reinforces ERSE's sanctioning powers

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, held a press conference to clarify that the Government is not profiting from the fuel crisis, attributing the price escalation to international geopolitical tensions and the closure of refineries in Europe. The minister guaranteed that all additional VAT revenue since February 2026 has been returned to taxpayers through ISP reductions, totaling approximately 700 million euros. Carvalho also highlighted that prices in Portugal are aligned with the European average and that the difference compared to Spain is equivalent to that separating this country from France. The Executive also announced the reinforcement of ERSE's sanctioning powers, which now has greater intervention throughout the petroleum system chain and demands greater transparency in the formation of consumer prices.
