In the second quarter of 2026, almost half of fixed Internet accesses in Portugal, precisely 47.4%, reached speeds of 1 Gbps or higher. This milestone represents the first time that connections in this speed range surpassed those of 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, signaling a significant evolution in the country's telecommunications infrastructure.
The data was released by the National Communications Authority (ANACOM) and reflects the growing investment in fiber optic technology. This growth was driven by increased digital content consumption, video conferences, and streaming services, with experts stating that faster connections are essential for technological innovation and service digitalization.
Urban areas have been the main beneficiaries of this high-speed infrastructure, although there is a continuous effort to expand quality connectivity to more rural regions. Competitiveness among internet providers has also contributed to improving the offering, with several operators launching promotions and more affordable packages.
With these advances, Portugal expects to establish itself as one of the leaders in connectivity in Europe, facilitating citizens' daily lives and boosting economic growth and attracting investments in the technology sector.
