Former Supreme Court (STF) President Celso de Mello wrote a text stating that the Court should not serve as a protective shield for individual misconduct. The justice, who is considered one of the most respected former presidents in the court's history, said he sent the text in response to the numerous questions he has been receiving about the crisis at the institution.
In the document, Celso de Mello clarified that he was not referring to any specific episode, but rather to events that have caused serious damage to the STF's image. He stated that the "corrosive shadow of suspicion" has been cast over the Supreme Court.
The former president warned that recent events have caused a loss of social trust in the integrity, impartiality, and independence of STF judges. In addition, he mentioned serious damage to the Supreme Court's authority and a severe decline in the respectability of one of the most important and historic institutions of the Republic.
Celso de Mello emphasized that any justices, without exception, must prevent the court from being used to protect individual misconduct. The text presents the principles that, in his view, should govern the country's highest court.
