Air traffic was gradually resumed on Tuesday at Jakarta's main international airport in Indonesia, following the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano. The explosion, which occurred on Sunday, left hundreds of aircraft grounded and affected more than 340 thousand passengers, causing the cancellation or delay of nearly 3 thousand flights.
Soekarno-Hatta airport, which serves the Indonesian capital, and four other terminals were reopened on Tuesday morning after authorities removed ash from the infrastructure. About 178 aircraft were on Soekarno-Hatta's runways on Tuesday morning, according to Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi.
The minister stated that the complete resumption of traffic will take time. The eruption of Anak Krakatau, located about 150 kilometers from Jakarta, caused disruptions that rank among the largest impacts ever recorded on regional air traffic.
