The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) launched on Monday, September 7, the "Back to School" campaign, aimed at raising awareness among drivers about the increased risks in the vicinity of schools during the start of the new school year. The campaign has the slogan "There are no excuses good enough" and seeks to alert to the importance of reducing speed and increasing attention in places frequented daily by children and young people.
ANSR states that speed can be determinant in the severity of the consequences of a pedestrian accident. According to data presented by the entity, in a pedestrian accident, the probability of fatal consequences for a pedestrian is 10% when the vehicle is traveling at 30 km/h, but rises to 90% when the speed reaches 50 km/h. The entity emphasizes that a difference of just 20 kilometers per hour can drastically change the outcome of an accident.
The campaign focuses on the back-to-school period, which is marked by a significant increase in traffic in the vicinity of schools, involving children, families, school transport, and other vulnerable users of the public road.
