Brazil is getting increasingly closer to overtaking the United States as the second largest market for Portuguese wine imports, currently holding third place right behind France. In just four years, the country rose from fourth to third place in the national exports ranking, having overtaken the United Kingdom during this period.
In 2025, Brazil ended the year just one decimal point of percentage away from matching the market share of the United States, which demonstrates the upward trajectory of the South American country. This proximity suggests that the overtaking may happen soon, consolidating Brazil as an increasingly relevant market for Portuguese producers.
Unlike what is happening worldwide, where a "hemorrhage" of wine consumption is being recorded, the Brazilian market continues to resist this downward trend. The country stands out as one of the few markets where Portugal manages to increase its sales, demonstrating counter-cyclical behavior relative to the global reality of the sector.
In stark contrast, Portuguese wine exports to the United States are in steep decline, with double-digit decreases. This drop in the North American market clearly contrasts with the growth observed in Brazil, which reinforces the strategic importance of the Brazilian market for the Portuguese wine sector.
