Russia launched an attack described as "complex" against Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, which caused strong explosions, two dead and "significant damage" in the city. The attack occurred after the visit of US negotiators to Ukraine.
On Sunday, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, met with Ukrainian officials in Kiev. This visit happened one day after the same negotiators had held intensive meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The Russian attack represents a significant escalation in the conflict, happening at a time when US-mediated peace negotiations were underway. The military action contrasts with the ongoing diplomatic efforts, causing fatalities and destruction in the Ukrainian capital.
