Portugal recorded a significant decline in the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), falling in all three assessed domains — Science, Reading and Mathematics — and always remaining below the average of OECD countries. This decline brought Portugal to results similar to those obtained in 2006, representing a setback of approximately 20 years in school performance indicators.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the entity responsible for coordinating PISA, issued a strong warning regarding the Portuguese situation, stating that the gains previously achieved by the country were completely reversed. This indicates that Portugal lost the progress it had made in international education assessments.
PISA data are considered one of the main international thermometers for assessing the quality of education systems, allowing comparisons between countries and monitoring the evolution of student results over time.
