The largest international assessment in Education reveals that more advantaged Portuguese students are, on average, four school years ahead of their poorer peers in terms of academic performance. This disparity represents one of the greatest educational inequalities recorded in the country.
According to the study, only 10.8% of disadvantaged students in Portugal manage to achieve a high level of academic performance. This data contrasts significantly with the results of students from more affluent backgrounds.
The research analyzed the impact of socioeconomic status on school results, demonstrating that poverty remains a determining factor in the academic success of Portuguese students. The study reveals the persistence of significant barriers for students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
