Natalia Bertran was willing to spend up to US$90,000, about R$463,000, on her son's first year of college. However, when it was time to enroll him, most of that money ended up being directed to a gap year.

Instead of taking her oldest son to live in a university dormitory last year, Bertran accompanied him to the airport for an eight-month trip around the world. The program was conducted with Baret Scholars, an organization specializing in educational travel.
