Sweden is to spend seven billion Swedish kronor, equivalent to 630 million euros, on the purchase of Himars rocket launch artillery systems from the United States. The contract includes a dozen vehicles equipped with rocket launchers and a large quantity of ammunition.
The Swedish Government indicated that this acquisition will allow the Swedish armed forces to operate in larger areas and with a greater range than current systems. The Himars systems are manufactured by the American company Lockheed Martin and the first deliveries are scheduled for 2027.
Sweden is reinforcing its defense capabilities after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in 2022. This Scandinavian country abandoned decades of military non-alignment to join NATO following this invasion, as did Finland.
