Israeli minister asks Netanyahu to recognize the Falklands as "occupied Argentine territory"

CNN Portugal8 September 2026 at 07:47

Israeli Minister Ben Gvir asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to recognize the Falkland Islands as "occupied Argentine territory". This position was expressed publicly by the Israeli politician.

Ben Gvir justified the request by arguing that the British not only occupy the territory, but also carry out oil drilling there. The minister also mentioned that Israeli companies participate in these oil extraction operations.

According to Ben Gvir, the British "steal money from the Argentine people" through these activities. The minister defended that Israel should recognize Argentine sovereignty over the islands, at a time when the United Kingdom has maintained the administration of the territory since 1833.

This position arises in the context of international tensions over the status of the Falkland Islands, which Argentina claims as its territory since the 19th century and which were the subject of a war between the two countries in 1982.
