Macron presses European Union to ban social media use for minors under 15 years old

oglobo8 September 2026 at 06:28

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, asked the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to push for European legislation that prohibits access to social media for children under 15 years of age, with the objective of "protecting all children" in the member states of the bloc. Macron made the request through a letter dated August 29, which the AFP news agency had access to.

The French President intends to make the protection of children on social media and the regulation of screen time one of the main achievements of his second term, which ends in May 2027. In the letter, Macron advocated for the need to "go further and harmonize, through a new European text, the prohibition of access for children under 15 years of age to social media platforms".

Macron stated that "the urgency exists" to implement this measure throughout the European Union. The objective is to create uniform legislation that applies to all member countries of the bloc, guaranteeing consistent protection for European children against the potential harms of social media.

With no future in sight, the far-right came riding a light-blue motorcycle from the GDR

The article analyzes the rise of the far-right in Germany, particularly the AfD's success in the former GDR territories, exploring how candidates like Ulrich Siegmund used nostalgia for East Germany, including vehicles like the light-blue Simson motorcycle, to mobilize voters. The text argues that, beyond immigration, the party capitalized on the trauma of a failed reunification and the destruction of 2.5 million jobs in East German industry, in a context where capitalism no longer promises prosperity to the new generations. The left, heir to the values of the GDR, appears to have lost its political grammar in this territory in mourning.
