National Health Service needs 600 anaesthetists

Correio da Manhã8 September 2026 at 01:30

The National Health Service faces a need for 600 specialist doctors in anaesthesiology to fill the gaps in public health services. The situation worries health authorities, who acknowledge the difficulties in maintaining complete teams in hospitals.

Paradoxically, Portugal is above the European average in terms of number of anaesthesiology specialists per inhabitants. This information shows that, although the country has a favourable proportion of these professionals, their distribution and availability in the public system continues to be a challenge.

The Medical Association announces that it will request the government to create more places for training specialists in this area. The objective is to ensure that the NHS can meet the growing needs for healthcare and reduce dependence on temporary or external solutions.
