Switzerland is moving forward with a project that aims to reduce dependence on large technology vendors and strengthen the digital sovereignty of public administration. The solution under evaluation is openDesk, an open source platform that aims to replace proprietary solutions such as Microsoft 365.
The project is coordinated by the Digital Transformation Service (TDT) of the Federal Administration and has the participation of several Swiss cantons that have already expressed interest in the platform. The main objective is to ensure that citizen data remains on Swiss servers, under national jurisdiction.
The openDesk is already in the testing phase in several organizations, including the Canton of Bern. The platform offers functionalities similar to those of Microsoft 365, including productivity, communication and collaboration tools.
