The victory of the party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in regional elections puts at risk the so-called "political barrier" or "cordon sanitaire" that German democratic parties have maintained against the far-right.

The far-right party obtained significant results that complicate the formation of a stable regional government.

According to the news, the regional government could be formed in three different ways: a super-coalition of the remaining democratic parties, an alliance with the BSW party (Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht), or through a minority executive.

This situation represents a challenge for traditional German parties, which will have to decide whether to maintain the isolation of AfD or adapt to the new political reality resulting from the advance of the far-right.
