An Australian woman was buried in a biodegradable coffin made from mycelium and hemp fibers, in an ecological initiative that represents a first in Australia. Carolyn, whose surname was not disclosed for privacy reasons, was about 70 years old.
The burial took place on Friday, September 4, by friends and family at Springwood Cemetery, in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales. The ceremony marked the first burial using this ecological technology in the country.
The coffin, known as "Living Cocoon", was developed by the Dutch company Loop Biotech. The material is produced from mycelium and hemp fibers, which are placed in a mold where the mycelium grows and binds to the fibers.
