Russia announced on Monday the closure of the German consulate in Saint Petersburg, as a retaliatory measure amid tension in relations between the two countries. The decision was made by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and requires the consulate to cease its operations, with a deadline until September 18 for staff to leave the country.
The measure comes after Germany attributed to Moscow a attempted drone attack at Leipzig-Halle airport in early August. Additionally, the German country arrested Bulgarians suspected of trying to set fire to a building with defense companies in Munich.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reaffirmed the decision, already announced previously, to close the cultural centers of the Goethe-Institut in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
