The fisheries sector will receive an additional 13 million euros in support to address the increased cost of fuel. The new notice was communicated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Sea on September 4 and is funded by the MAR2030 Programme, with a total allocation of 18 million euros that are also destined for the aquaculture and fish processing and commercialization industries.
Of the total amount, 13 million is allocated to fisheries, 4.5 million to the processing industry and 500 thousand euros to aquaculture. The eligible period for support runs from February 28, 2026 to December 31, 2026, with applications opening on September 11, 2026 and closing at 6:00 PM on October 12, 2026.
According to the Ministry, rates were set for the various fisheries segments and respective vessel sizes, based on historical data on the weight of fuel cost in sales volume and the official percentage of fuel price increase. The financing and respective eligibility conditions were presented to the sector, which reacted positively, with only one alteration made to the initially defined segments based on the input of some fisheries associations.
With this initiative, the Government acknowledges that fisheries is one of the sectors where fuel price increases have the greatest impact and that is most vulnerable to market fluctuations.
