Companies call for return of temporary suspensions of border controls at airports

RENA – the Association of Airlines in Portugal and Ryanair are asking the European Union to extend the possibility for countries to temporarily suspend the European entry and exit system (EES) at airports, which collects biometric data from third-country citizens. Ryanair warns that the end of the exception regime, which expired on Sunday, threatens to worsen queues at border controls, after waits of two to three hours were recorded this summer at airports such as Lisbon, Krakow, Milan and Rome. Nine countries, including Portugal, had already sent a letter to the European Commission asking for guarantees on the continuity of flexibility mechanisms, which did not happen. The EES came into operation on 10 April, replacing the manual stamping of passports with an electronic registration with biometric data collection.

CTT starts to move into insurance distribution in Portugal

CTT emerged as one of the fastest-growing insurance distribution channels in Portugal, going from a market share of 0.3% to 4.2% in the Life segment between 2023 and 2025, a 21-fold growth representing an increase of 329 million euros in sales. This growth is due to the strategic partnership with Generali Tranquilidade, launched at the end of 2023, which allowed CTT and Banco CTT to market the insurer's products. Banking remains the dominant channel for Life insurance distribution, with 72% market share, while the internet, although it has doubled its presence to 1%, continues to represent only a minimal fraction of the market. Traditional agents and brokers maintain their importance, especially in the Non-Life segment, but insurers' own branches continue to lose weight consistently.
